Head of Group's Global Missions Named

John Quam was appointed in January as the national facilitator for global ministries of the Mission America Coalition (MAC). Quam's appointment fills the position left vacant by the death of Bill Waldrop in December 2000, MAC officials said.

Quam's primary responsibility is to connect denominations, local churches and ministries for collaborative projects that would touch unreached people groups around the world.

"John brings a wealth of international and national experience including serving for a number of years as a missionary to Brazil and then on the national staff of Advancing Churches in Missions Commitment," MAC chairman Paul Cedar said. "In addition, he has served either part time or full time on the MAC national facilitation team since 1993. He has a strong passion for the gospel and a great heart for unreached people."

Honorary co-chairs of the coalition are Campus Crusade for Christ founder Bill Bright and longtime evangelist Billy Graham. MAC leaders come from 80-plus denominations and more than 350 Christian ministries.

Ministries Unite for Addiction Coalition

"Some of the toughest ministries" in the body of Christ will be converging in Spain to become more effective and better equipped in reaching out to those with life-controlling addictions.

Hundreds of ministers, counselors, leaders and staff of Christian-based alcohol and drug projects, youth, prison and social workers, academics, and recovering addicts from all over the globe are expected to attend the International Substance Abuse and Addiction Coalition (ISAAC) International Congress 2003, which is set for May 11-15 in Madrid.

"We anticipate God to inspire, refresh and equip workers from some of the toughest ministries in the kingdom," founding ISAAC member Jean LaCour said. "We want to help people from churches become more effective with addiction-related problems in their own communities."

Pastor E.V. Hill Dies

A longtime Los Angeles pastor recognized as a national civil rights leader and a power within one of the nation's largest African American denominations has died. Edward Victor Hill, 69, who would have celebrated his 42nd anniversary in February as the leader of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, died Feb. 24 after a bout with pneumonia and other undisclosed medical problems.

Better known as E.V. Hill, he was hospitalized Feb. 8, listed in critical condition and in intensive care. In the last eight months of his life, Hill had to preach sitting down because of a condition that had weakened his legs. He also suffered from diabetes, his son, E.V. Hill II, pastor of Calvary Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church in North Hollywood, said.

Known as a preacher whose sermons "could thunder with righteousness even as he could listen with a pastor's heart," Hill was a force in the National Baptist Convention and a speaker at rallies nationwide sponsored by Promise Keepers.

Bishop Charles Blake, pastor of West Angeles Cathedral in Los Angeles and a leader in another predominantly African American denomination, the Church of God in Christ, called Hill "one of the most significant personalities in the clergy over the past 30 or 40 years." "He was a great preacher, a tremendous preacher," Blake said, "and a common man's theologian."

Baptist preacher Jerry Falwell called him "a community-minded pacesetter, pro-life leader and moral crusader."
