What It Means to Be Made in the Image of God

There are times when I feel as if my human weaknesses are so profound that even the Lord, in all of His power, is unable to transform the woman I am into someone of worth and value. I am painfully aware of the battle that goes in my thought life, and then I am perpetually cognizant of my propensity to spend too much money. I recall how frustrated I became with a person, and even though I didn't show it outwardly, my emotions were at a boiling point.

I must remind myself day after day I have been made in the very image of God; therefore, He has something magnificent and compelling to work with! How glorious to know that Jesus doesn't start with "nothing" to conform us into His own image, but He uses our holy DNA to begin the process of helping us to become more like Christ.

God created everything out of nothing, and wonder of all wonders, He didn't need my incompetent help to do it! Everything created is completely His; therefore, He is easily able to transform His creation into whatever He wants it to be. He turned water into wine; He multiplied two fish and five loaves into a banquet feast that fed more than 500 people. He used mud to heal a blind man's eyes and told ravenous, angry lions that they were no longer hungry! Every transformation that our good, good Father accomplishes was made out of something He had created long ago.

He is Lord of all creation; thus, He is Lord of me and of my glaring weaknesses. He doesn't throw away the woman that I am in this transformational process, but He uses my raw material, which He specifically designed, to change me into a person that is of great use in His unshakable kingdom.

He used the impetuous nature of Peter to turn him into a bold demonstration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He used the fearfulness of Timothy to transform him into a young man who was totally reliant upon the strength of the Lord. He used the inability of Moses to clearly communicate and changed Him into one of the greatest leaders in all of history. He used the brilliant and often pretentious mind of Paul to use him as the vessel of revelation knowledge that has stabilized the church for millennia. And He transformed the ordinary Mary into a vessel through which Jesus would be delivered to the world.

Our triumphant Creator can make diligent and anointed servants out of the weakest of us. Our raw material is not disposable, nor is it useless to the Lord. He can transform my glaring faults into facets of beauty and strength. I must come to Him as a willing servant who humbly offers herself every day to His grand plan. I must.
