As chaplains, Kim Kidd, Brenda Swartz and Tracie Sherer have the privilege and responsibility to serve their community in unique ways—from helping people in car accidents, to serving military veterans, to serving people after a major hurricane.
Kidd experienced stopping at the scene of an accident as a chaplain to just sit with an injured police officer until the ambulance arrived, she explains on the "Warrior Family Ministries" podcast on the Charisma Podcast Network. Describing her role as a "first responder," she says that just being present with hurting people helps them tremendously.
"We all believe and know that Jesus Christ is Lord," Swartz says. "We know that He died for our sins, He rose again. And that's what we bring to the table to serve outside the walls [of church]. Now, each one of us does have, you know, we do have our own churches that we belong to, and that's wonderful. But when we step outside those walls, into the public eyes, we leave our own denominational beliefs behind and we serve with that common love, that common heart.
"And so, because of that, we get into places that pastors and ... church people cannot get into. And I think that's what's so amazing about being a chaplain, is that we can go into places where others can't. It almost sounds like 'Star Trek.'"
