The Best in Bible Software

Which Bible software packages are the most helpful to pastors and teachers? Before you buy, you'll want to know the ins and outs of the best products available today.

Technology is no longer something reserved for a select group of scientists working in a secluded lab hoping to discover the next great breakthrough that will transform society. Our world has become increasingly driven by technology, leaving very few aspects of our lives untouched. Even the church has been bitten by the computer bug, and pastors are discovering how to use Bible software to help in their preaching and teaching preparation.

In the following pages, Ministries Today will give you insight into four high-quality software products that span the scope of study needs, as well as a Bible reference work to supplement your computerized study time. Whether you are a novice computer user or an expert, a new believer or a lifelong Christian, there is software here for you.

Every software program reviewed contains numerous Bible versions and reference works, some more comprehensive than others. As with previous versions of all the works, users can enter at various levels and unlock books as they are needed. Purchase of the scholar or deluxe editions provides the most books and Bibles; however, users must determine their usable value when considering the package.

As with all the products reviewed, the software engine is what determines the ease of use and portability of the software. For example, Logos Library System (LLS) is the engine used to drive the Logos Scholar Edition and also serves as the engine for other software libraries, including Jack Hayford's Spirit-Filled Life Library, Thomas Nelson Electronic Reference, Josh McDowell Library, Word Biblical Commentaries, John MacArthur's, Charles Stanley's and more. Users can mix and match from various sources and create a custom library that suits them best.

Without exception, all the products reviewed loaded easily and worked right out of the box. They all performed well, and no bugs or glitches were discovered. All the products were presented in a visually consistent manner; however, each was developed around the particular strengths inherent in the software. We found all of them to be very useful and find it difficult to rate any one a clear "top choice." However, based upon the user's needs, one above the rest will be their best choice.

Ease of use is of primary concern, with flexibility and expendability following close behind. Every product reviewed was examined on the following points:

* Ease of installation and use

* Simple pull-down menus

* Bibles and reference works that are useable throughout the text, including original languages

* Keyword/text searches in reference works

* Cut-and-paste features that allow the user to easily transfer sections of text to a word processor

* Help features

* Cost effectiveness

For each area reviewed, there are corresponding stars assigned, as well as stars for overall product quality:
