Leadership is a marathon, not a sprint.
The apostle Paul reminded us to "run with endurance the race that is set before us" (Heb. 12:1).
Leaders are not made by the granting of a title. Authority is not necessarily a mark of leadership. Positional leadership is only a starting line for the race set before a leader.When the race official begins the cadence "on your mark, get set, go," the simple word "go" indicates the beginning of a journey. Effective leaders develop early recognition that the race will span decades. And the surface to be traveled by a leader is filled with obstacles.
The race is a series of struggles, tests, and pain. Challenges and adversity accompany the leader's journey. As with any race, a leader can expect to lose balance and perhaps stumble and fall. Marathon runners are frequent fallers.
Leadership is expressed to others by the manner in which struggles are conquered. The key to winning against struggles will always depend upon the nourishment of the leader.
Our intake dictates our output.
Leadership books, seminars and study can provide excellent material to sustain a long run. It's also important to find a godly leadership coach. Successful runners are well coached.
But the highest nutritional value for a coach can only be supplied by God's Nutritional Center.
The Word of God will supply the answer to every leadership challenge. A Proverb a day will help keep a leader's focus properly directed. God's Word is a leader's ultimate counsel.
Undernourished leaders rarely finish the race.
Leadership is a marathon of high hurdles.
"The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I was helped; therefore my heart rejoices, and with my song I will thank Him" (Ps. 28:7).
