You Will Never Hear a True Leader Say These Words

People who serve others are never lonely.
People who serve others are never lonely. (Lightstock )

The language of a leader reveals the heart.

It's just careless to speak in terms of I rather than we. Leaders can make language mistakes, without thinking. It really doesn't indicate a problem with the heart.

But the following words, often bellowed by a leader to a hard working team, indicate a problem:

"It's lonely at the top."

Raise your hand if you've heard this phrase a few times in your career. Turn to your neighbor and ask, "Have you ever said that?"

The phrase is selfish and indicates a misguided view of leadership.

Servant leaders may have positional authority but operate most effectively with a towel and wash basin. Servanthood is not top down. Leaders serve best in a matrix organization in which authority and responsibility flows horizontally.  Service to one another is horizontal.

When the disciples were worn slick from a couple of long days of ministry, they found a mountainside for rest. When a crowd gathered, the disciples asked Jesus for comp time.  His response ...

"Have you no compassion?" is the response of a servant leader. Such a response can only come from the heart of servant.

To say that leadership is a lonely state is to remove all doubt about the leader's understanding of service.

People who serve others are never lonely.

"For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45).
