Leaders listen with optimism.
We remain open to all ideas. We remain open to people whom we haven't been open to hearing in the past. Perhaps a person is considered boring because we haven't received the speaker with an open mind.
It's not easy to open a closed mind—especially if it's our own mind. Our burden is to make a conscious effort from the beginning to not fake interest but to make it. Effective leaders have a mindset that everyone has something of value to add to the conversation.
I think part of the problem is that leaders are often thinking faster than most team members are speaking. Our thoughts race to the end of a thought or an idea. We see execution and think about implementation. Perhaps we even jump to a conclusion now and then.
Listening with optimism requires a clear mind and the ability to forget what is behind.
"Brothers, I do not count myself to have attained, but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal to the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore let those of us who are mature be thus minded. And if you think differently in any way, God will reveal even this to you" (Phil. 3:13-15).
