I remember a day when my 5-year-old daughter (at the time) asked me if I would change her mind.
Upon careful research into this request, it seems a parental unit said yes about something and then later changed the answer to no. When my daughter pressed for an answer the way 5-year-olds press for an answer, the only available response was "I changed my mind."
It's a complicated thing to change a mind. I understand more about having my mind renewed than I do the attempt to change a mind. I have spent the majority of my career as a professor in a college classroom making drip attempts to add to a mind. Like most teachers, I'm not sure I really changed anything.
Knowledge can be a powerful change agent. Transferring knowledge through lecture, or the written word or through debates ad nauseum is a process rather than an event.
Leaders work daily to influence the thinking of their followers. Leaders impact individuals in hopes of changing the way an organization thinks and behaves.
I feel certain I cannot change a mind. Most people don't wake up in the morning with a desire to have their mind changed. When we see those who proudly admit, "I'm set in my ways," I know their mind is set in cement.
Leaders should aspire to change outcomes rather than minds.
"So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it" (Is. 55:11).
