Most leaders become leaders because they were able to make an impact that moved a needle.  Promotion comes because someone sees that you have the potential to move others to move needles.

For example, one person impacts an organization by 1X. If that person is placed into a leadership position, the impact could be a multiple of X. The right leader, at the right time and place can impact an organization in multiples that are difficult to measure.

This is the multiplier effect of leadership.

Consider how many days of life an organization may have remaining. For this example, let's assume the answer is twenty years. If a leader teaches a new principle or skill to an organization, the impact of the training is multiplied over the next twenty years.  

Leaders act in the moment but realize one good change today will be multiplied over time and people. We look for change that will be sustained and multiplied.

But beware the shiny object. A leader may hear about something new happening across the street and rush to implement the new idea without counting the costs. Many shiny objects are simply divisive. We've probably all implemented new ideas and wish we could undo the impact of some.  The difference between multiplication and division is subtle.

What about this new shiny object?

1. Be open and willing to try. Staying put for too long is almost always financially divisive.

2. Pray specifically for discernment.  

3. Consider outcomes. If the worst scenario were to occur, what would it mean to the organization?

4. Risk/Reward. Is the risk worth the reward?

5. Will your team learn and grow in the process? Sometimes the journey is more valuable than the outcome.

The multiplier effect is a reward to those with the preparation, courage and support to move the organization forward.  The leaders who risk most are those who march in circles.

It just makes the organization dizzy.

"And continuing daily with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved" (Acts 2:46-47).
