Leaders Have Weapons for Offense and Defense

"Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me."

Effective leaders are shepherds not bullies. Leaders know that the proper care and feeding of a team will cause an increase in productivity.

The rod of a leader isn't meant to be used on the sheep. Rather, the rod is intended to be hurled at any enemy of productivity. Leaders knock out obstacles to growth. The rod is a mighty weapon of progress in the hands of a shepherd. The rod is a tool for offense.

The staff is an effective multi-purpose tool. The staff is primarily used for defense. The function I remind you about today is the hook of the staff. A shepherd uses his staff to reach out to sheep who have been tangled in bushes and deep weeds. Some sheep find themselves in a trip down a fast moving creek just before the shepherd's staff rescues the sheep from their folly.

Most of us can identify with patches of weeds and fast moving water. Or was that a train? We can all probably share a story of a time when a leader helped our work by skilled use of her rod and/or staff. Leaders bring comfort to their sheep and work improves.

Leaders rescue, revive and reward with offense and defense.

"Two are better than one, because there is a good reward for their labor together. For if they fall, then one will help up his companion" (Eccl. 4:9-10a).
