One of the many daily challenges for a leader is to determine when to listen.
There is so much chatter throughout a day. Everyone has an opinion. There is research and feedback to support every side of an issue. There are heads that nod and fingers that shake a warning.
Effective leaders survive by learning to differentiate among opinion, advice and counsel.
I met with my friend Eric Kehmeier last week. He is the CEO of a hot, fast growing tech company in Oklahoma. He leads well.
I've been thinking about the differentiation he made between opinion and advice. When team members seek his help he asks, "do you want my opinion or my advice?"
My opinion is what I think. My advice is what I've done.
So where does a leader turn for answers? Leaders are rarely moved by popular opinion. Highly effective leaders are also not easily moved by advice.
Wise leaders seek the counsel of Godly men and women. Furthermore, the highest and most trusted counsel comes from a Godly prayer warrior.
"Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers" (Ps. 1:1).
The next time a well-meaning person rattles off their opinion du jour simply ask ...
Have you prayed about this?
