Leaders are noted for and survive by a consistent demonstration of character and competency.
And lately, there's been a lot of attention given by writers to encourage the development of the skill of multitasking. All leaders multitask, right?
In my opinion, leaders don't lead well because they multitask. They lead well because they have achieved mastery of an important gifting. Mastery of anything is a long trip and rarely achieved by the taking of side trips. I will admit that there are several high profile leaders who appear to demonstrate multiple fields of mastery. I suspect, if we were to get "up close and personal" with a star leader, we would see one clearly identifiable gift at work.
Dilettante leaders have shallow gifts. Like Roman candles, they shoot into the air quickly, make some noise and spread momentary color—just before falling to earth in paper rubble. I've noticed an increase in leaders with shallow gifts. The Google kids have been taught to learn with YouTube videos and "Google it" training. There's no depth. There's no there, there.
Lack of mastery is soon exposed.
