How Do Leaders Create a New Normal?

Through the years, in many different churches and venues I've heard the words "new normal" offered as a personal enticement to come up higher.  The underlying assumption in this offer is that the listener can identify their personal normal.

In a business context, we are taught to seek change, to break things that work fine, and expect perpetual change as a way of business growth.  Nothing remains the same.

Sometimes as leaders we stir things up by making staff changes. We hire a change agent. We know in our heart that change is what we need.

Then the fight begins with how we battle against normal. We find ourselves speaking, "This is how we do things here." And "Oh, this is how we do things there."

As the Holy Spirit draws us into a changed life we soon find that we must change how we do things. We are taught to think new thoughts ...  to be "transformed by the renewal of our minds."

Personal growth is rarely comfortable.

Our response to the change agent determines our destiny.

  • Leaders depend upon change as their path to organizational improvement.
  • Leaders create discomfort not as a threat but rather a prescription.
  • Leaders create small changes to ready the organization for larger change.
  • Leaders demonstrate and coach change as a way of organizational life.
  • Leaders teach change as the new normal.

Comfort is the enemy of change.

Jesus taught radical change. Do you?
