Pilot and author of The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupery once wrote: "If you want to build a ship, don't herd people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea."
One of the greatest mistakes leaders make is to substitute tasks for vision. When it comes to accomplishing something really significant, teams need a vision far more than they need a do-to list.
Never underestimate the power of casting a great vision. If you've assembled the right team, they should already know how to collect wood and assign tasks. Your job as a leader isn't to micromanage or get involved in the nitty-gritty details. Trust your people. Empower them. Because what they're looking for is a great vision.
Re-think how your team works, and consider the kind of vision that will motivate them to your next great project. And never forget—It's a manager's job to assign tasks, and it's a leader's job to cast vision.
