Heal Your Servant: Grace and Exposing the Enemy’s Demonic Motivation

Man-cryingThrough the ministry of Heal Your Servant, we have four scheduled weekly conference calls. Every call is unique, and most are filled with surprises. Sometimes we will have one person on a call, and other times we have several callers.

On a recent phone conversation, I had one individual call in. I introduced myself. He then gave me his name. As is customary, I began a short prayer, asking God for His wisdom.

I concluded, and instead of hearing the words, “Amen,” I heard, “Why do you do this?”

It was as if the Lord had been preparing me for this question.

This past Sunday during the worship time, our worship minister had quoted 2 Corinthians 12:9-10:

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

These words had been my source of meditation that very day.

I replied, “Because I enjoy seeing God glorified.” The caller then asked, “What do you mean?” I said, “I delight in weakness because that is where our God conveys His power.”

The man began to sob. He then emptied his soul and exposed his transgression. He confessed he is a minister bound by Internet pornography. I listened intently as he expressed his painful and sinful condition. He has been in ministry for over 20 years, and as technology has increased, so has his addiction.

I prayed with and encouraged him. I recommended some reading and referred him to a list of professionals who have a proven track record in bringing about deliverance from this type of habitual sin.

He assured me he would follow the directive he received and was determined to gain victory over his sin.

The majority of calls we receive are on this very subject. It seems as if Internet pornography is the “sin de jour” with ministers in the church. Many do it thinking they will not be found out. The big problem, however, is that it affects every relationship in their lives. It affects relationships with their marriages, children, congregations, and most importantly God.

Anyone trapped by such a transgression is certain to be run through an emotional guilt gamut.

Many of you reading this story may respond with anger and indignation: Does this not disqualify a minister? Where is our standard? Why are we putting up with this in the church?

Before we point our finger in judgment, we must be aware that recent ministry polls have indicated anywhere between 50 percent and 70 percent of America’s ministers have struggled with this at one time or another.

Our attitude toward sexual transgression by leaders has always been reactionary and judgmental. Anytime we hide our own fault and judge those who “get caught,” we place the adversary in control.

It is time that we get ahead of this ploy and expose the enemy and his demonic motivation behind it. Let’s all search our own hearts and be absolutely honest with ourselves.

If you struggle with this or any other type of sin, do not allow the enemy to abuse you. God has provided your deliverance.
