In yesterday's blog I submitted that the essence of sacrifice appears to be a matter of the heart. David cried out from his heart, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart" (Ps. 51:17).

As we consider a broken spirit to be at least one definition of sacrifice to God, we must look inside our own hearts to consider our degree of brokenness. Certainly, leaders will be more effective in leading from a position of humility and with a contrite heart. A leader's inner strength should not need to be a matter of boasting coupled with demonstrations of power.

An effective leader demonstrates sacrifice through competency. Work quality speaks volumes about what matters most to a leader. I first must lead myself by expecting more of myself than I do any team member. A contrite spirit shows through an outward display of humility in performance. Leaders produce results without trumpets and drums of attention.

To not "need" praise is a clear demonstration of a broken spirit. I can only do what God does through me. When I get caught up in me and what I did and can do, I reduce my output as well as my leadership influence.

High-quality teaching is rooted in demonstration. We learn by doing what we have seen done well. Some leaders can only pass on instructions and commands. Effective leaders love to show and tell.

As I observe highly effective leaders, I am reminded that their powerful demonstrations of quality came with great personal sacrifice. Competency isn't achieved through a Google search. Foundations are poured without fanfare or fan clubs. All of the really hard work and preparation came with a deep personal commitment and personal sacrifice.

Hard work and sacrifice make competency seem easy.

"In Christ Jesus therefore I have reason to boast in my service to God. For I will not dare to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me ... " (Rom. 15:17-18).
