Economy May Shift Missions From Overseas to Domestic

"It's better to get people doing missions with a $500 to $1,000 trip than having to continue to cancel $3,000 trips because people can't afford to go." —Bill Mitchell, global impact pastor for First Baptist Church of Orlando, Fla., who has had to suspend a number of overseas short-term mission trips due to declines in giving. According to Mission Data International, overseas trips have declined 15 percent since 2008 while inquiries regarding domestic trips have increased. [christianitytoday.com, 6/10/10]

I agree with Beth Turner wholeheartedly. We can serve at our own doorstep free of charge, and just look how much money we could save for the really desperate mission work overseas. Then perhaps the light of the gospel will inspire the people overseas to be their own missionaries, and begin to pay their own way. If we give freely of our time and our tithe, this should be enough to support the local church and the local government.

Reaching out may become a daily happening if one doesn't segregate a missions outreach from normal life. If someone comes to San Francisco to minister and someone from San Francisco goes to the place the one coming to San Francisco is from, it may occur to both they can reach out wherever they are, home, at school, shopping, commuting, etc. We might be the church of the New Testament again!
