Haggard Goes ‘Below the Belt’

QUOTE: “If you’re going to come out and begin a new life, why would you choose an HBO documentary, then meet with the liberal Hollywood press? The fact that he’s attacking the church or New Life Church, when they did so much to help him and his family, is below the belt.” —Focus on the Family executive H.B. London, on the recent tactics of former New Life Church pastor Ted Haggard, who last week held a press conference in Los Angeles to promote the upcoming documentary The Trials of Ted Haggard. Produced by Alexandra Pelosi (daughter of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi), the HBO special follows Haggard in the months after his fall and includes him ranting against a church that “has said go to hell” and “chose not to forgive me.” London was involved in counseling Haggard through a restoration process, which the high-profile minister prematurely broke off, according to multiple sources. Haggard is scheduled to tape a show with Oprah Winfrey later this week that will air later this month. [AP, 1/10/09]

Maybe his latter ministry will exceed his first? God has a way of making "all things work together for good..." Ya' know?

You know the story of getting the parallel line one degree off. Down the road you are way off! The church won't receive him because they don't see him penitent to the degree of his former influence. He is now forced to touch the people in the world he should have been touching with the gospel. Of course he will see things wrong with the church, but he was part of that problem. We do the best we can and God judges our hearts.

I am a Christian counselor in Phoenix and frequently work with homosexuals who want to be healed. The problem is caused by, what the Bible calls, unclean spirits. The demons get into the bodies of abused children and morph their sexuality during puberty. If the demons are removed and the person renews their mind on the Word of God, they get healed. I tried to get ahold of Ted twice while he was a Phoenix First Assembly of God for rehabilitation and was unable to make contact. Church rehabilitation rarely works for these type of cases. These type of demons cause a wide range of sexual perversions. He can be healed and restored. Bro. Mike www.hardcorechristianity.com

A man should not be restored back to ministry, until the reputation of his repentance exceeds the reputation of his sin. ( Charles Spurgen)

This is the big league - you don't get a mulligan. The rules are different in the big leagues than they are in a small community church.
Ted needs to put on his big boy britches and find the Lord's will for his life and do what he needs to do for his family. It was him that abandoned his family's best interest - not the church and not the Body.
It's a long, lonely road he walks -- and I pray he does it in a fashion that brings no further reproach on the Lord, his family - or anybody else. He did this.
The Church did not do this. When you fall, you don't get to have a lot of say about how you get picked up - or if you get picked up. However, if he can find his boot straps, he can, with the guidance and help of the Lord, get on with his life.
But he should point no fingers at anybody for how they responded to HIS wilfull actions. He isn't owed what he's requiring of the Body.

Restoration is relational. When did Pastor London "counsel" witth Ted Haggard? How often was he personally in contact with him after being appointed to help restore him? The picture being given repeatedly to the public is that Ted was unavailable and unwilling to receive counseling, discipline, etc. Is that really true?

saying and acting broken infront of a crowed is different than being broken and following through with the counceling of wise men you have place in authority over you. I forgive Pastor Haggard but he must follow through with restoration. I am in no position to judge him restored or not I do not know the inside circumstances to all that is going on, and neither do any of you, the people counceling him do and if they are dissapointed than so I am. Pray for Pastor Haggard and the men around him and pray for the Peace of Jerusalem

I listened to Ted's messages that he preached at that church recently...and I have to admit, I was moved by his brokenness. Did I read him wrong? Possibly...but I say let's see where this all goes as he begins his new life. Give Ted a second chance to make things right for himself, family, friends, the church and world. God is so full of love and mercy for all of us.
