Steve Strang: Rick Warren’s Higher Purpose

Rick-Warren-Saddleback-Church-smallEditor’s Note: Daily during January and February, MinistryTodaymag.com will feature an article from pastor and best-selling author Rick Warren and his staff in conjunction with his new book, What on Earth Am I Here For? Warren is the guest editor for Charisma’s Ministry Today magazine for its January/February issue.

Rick Warren knows it’s not about him.

Because of this, it wasn’t a stretch for the pastor to begin The Purpose Driven Life with the now-famous line: “It’s not about you.” Indeed, as author of the No. 1 best-selling hardback book in American history other than the Bible, he’s reaped enormous rewards. Yet he’s also used that wealth to further God’s kingdom rather than his own.

First, reimbursed his Saddleback Church for his salary since day one; and for years, he has since “reverse tithed,” which means he gives 90 percent and lives on 10 percent. Rather than neglect his church, as many pastors tend to do, he remains very much hands on—and that was obvious the day I visited Saddleback’s main campus in Lake Forest, Calif., a few months ago. That day, Rick preached an inspiring message and then baptized about 50 people after the service.

He remain’s a pastor’s pastor, which is why I invited him to be guest editor of our January-February issue of Ministry Today magazine on knowing your life purpose. In a day when scandal among clergy is far too common, Rick is a shining example of what can be accomplished when a man knows his purpose in life. I hope you’re inspired as you read the articles in the January-February MT issue—either in print or online. In addition, we want to do our part to enlist your participation and thousands of others’ in his PEACE Plan to:

Plant faith communities

Equip servant leaders

Assist the poor

Care for the sick

Educate the next generation

To mark the 10th anniversary of The Purpose Driven Life’s release, he’s rereleased the book for a new generation and is focusing on encouraging the church to truly be the church through projects such as the PEACE Plan.

In a culture increasingly gone haywire, and at a time when most “successful” pastors are seemingly more concerned with being liked and making people feel good rather than sounding a prophetic alarm, Rick is a role model. He isn’t afraid to speak out. Though the liberal media doesn’t favor him more than any other Bible-believing leader, at least they can’t blast him for saying off-the-wall things. He’s savvy yet sticks to the Word of God. And he does this while battling behind the scenes some enormous challenges that would crush many men or neutralize their influence.

I believe part of this favor is because Rick doesn’t just rail against the culture but offers solutions. He pastors one of the nation’s largest churches in arguably the most liberal state in the Union. Yet by every indication—in reading about it and visiting firsthand—Saddleback is growing, healthy and making a true difference.

The articles in the January-February issue of MT from Rick and his staff are meant to inspire you to do the same wherever you are. I ask you not only to read them but also devour them, meditate on how they apply to you and resolve to put them into practice. You can read fresh content each day during January and February on ministrytodaymag.com with the theme of knowing your life’s purpose.

You can also get this 24/7 on our free Charisma News app, available at any app store or by texting “charisma” to 24587. Once on the app, click the “Ministry” tab to read content directly related to the ministry world. In addition, you’ll have access to breaking news and spiritual insight from Charisma News, daily devotions and other good stuff. We recently added this tab to the app and are experimenting to see how many people use it. Eventually we may develop an app exclusively for Ministry Today. So, let us know what you think by downloading the app, using it and giving us your comments.

You’ll also be interested in Daniel Kolenda’s article on finding God’s will (page 44 of the magazine). Though it’s the lone entry from a non-Saddleback contributor, it fits perfectly with the January-February issue theme. Look for more from Daniel, who is Reinhard Bonnke’s successor at Christ for All Nations, online at ministrytodaymag.com, where we’re also giving away copies of his new book, Live Before You Die.

Ultimately, I hope all these resources help you either discover or reaffirm your life purpose.

It's hard to even see ANYMORE "REAL GRACE", with all of today's modern VERSIONS (all based in nicolaitanism EVEN AS WHAT CAUSED THE GOLDEN CANDLESTICK "TO BE REMOVED" just short of 2,000 YRS. now of 'angelics from heven' DOWNLOADS upon the lessor human brain, here on this tiny blue marble (IN WHICH WE AS HUMANS in our intial life down here, are being introduced to REAL discernments, while the vast majority CONTINUE ON IN DILLUSION OF HAVING 'gifts ONLY of suspect' AS TO TRUTH vs. error) but, however, 'keep looking UP', for our redemntion FROM HERE soon draweth 'nye' (IN THIS ONGOING 'nuclear age' of non-reduction, 'mutual destruction' PHILOSOPHY of man under 'angelic influences' WHO WERE SENT HERE in their 'vacillations' AND LEAVINGS OF THEIR FIRST ESTATE, and sent here by God 'IN THEIR PUNISHMENTS' and to be judged before THE 'SECOND DEATH' judgments of mankind FROM Adam, Eve (the "mother of all natural living soul BODIES, WHICH ARE TO BE SEPARATED FROM our ''temporal INITIAL tents"

I see a lot of fire breathed (BJStone) and cynical, sarcastic utterances in the replies to this article. What I don't see is any grace, any praise or any attitudes that reflect Jesus.
At best the comments reflect the attitudes of the Pharisee's.
I don't see any of Jesus "Let he is not guilty cast the first stone", any be humble and full of Grace wrod's of your mouths - let alone hearts.
Maybe you should post a few criticisms about each others posted replies.
Maybe some of you should meditate on God's word itself, Vengence (Judgement) is mine, and mine alone.

#5,our N.T.writer John (whom our Lord said would be the only one left alive who TRUELY 'tarried' in 'Jerusalem', becoming truely, genuinely AS AN ALIVE, yet baptised with Holy Spirit 'AND genuine FIRE', of all Apostles, yet ALIVE TO ACTUALLY SEE, then WRITE during 'PRE', 'MID', & 'POST' re: actual promised 'parousia of our Lord', of 'JACOB'S trouble', YES surviving THOSE 7 yrs., beyond unto the promised 'cutting short', 73 A.D., Masada, LEAVING ONE HOUR LEFT, which brings these heavens 'on fire' SUDDENLY, WHEN THEN 'all flesh' remains to 'DEMONIC' vultures DOWN HERE in this 'dirty now and now') recording for us THEN that "MANY anti-christ's", "MANY false prophets", et all ARE NOW in this world. We are not seeing something new (some nearly 2,000 yrs. later). Azusa St. revival did not produce ANYTHING new either. Even from this 1906 'ghetto outbreak' HAS COME EVEN MORE 'anti-christ' & 'false prophets' WHICH MARK THE END for soul life ON THIS TINY GLOBE. We must keep looking, ONLY UP !

How quickly we forget! Isn't Rick Warren the same Pastor that stated, "Christians and Moslems worship the same God." not too far back, maybe a few months it has been now. The Islamic community widely applauded him for stating this and his views on Chrislam, the blending of Christian and Islamic religion together. No thanks!! I believe he could be The False Prophet. He certainly has enough people believing in his messages and following him.. Jesus said. "You will know them by their fruits." Does Christ really want us to be purpose driven? Doesn't He say to strive to love, only, not to perform for His love? Food For Thought

# 3 commentator AGAINST "America's Pastor, Pastors", seems to reflect being a good 'example' of another on that 'broad road' to heaven NOT BEING OF THE DECEIVED, and calling "America's Pastors" AS THOSE OF THE "BEING DECEIVED". Both roads, however, are 'broad roads', AND THE NARROW ROAD (so far escaping BOTH sides of this argument and observances toward today's so-called revivals and renewals of the faith), thank God, will have an opportunity to at least attempt toward finding that TRUELY NARROW ROAD only the genuine baptismS with the Holy Spirit AND "FIRE" by the ending of that 'next life' promised in same 'dna', different 'dust', far from here "each in their own order" IN THE SIN OF THE SIMILITUDE OF THE FIRST ADAM, and facing a 'second death' unto where each individual's eternal existence will be spent, shared, either in various degrees of 'outer darkness' OR WITHIN THE WALLS OF A JERUSALEM "ABOVE", WITH SOME, however, unto eternal damnation, EVEN BACK HERE INTO THIS LAKE OF FIRE !

A few years ago a few charlatans came along, catching the attention of so many folks of what a wonderful "christian villiage" they were building and everyone was practically shamed for not getting on board with that "wonderful idea" that was called PTL or (praise the lord) with the exaltation of a few Charlatans. That thing turned out to be nothing but a scam with an "air conditioned dog house".

The similarity this time is, it is another SCAM wth the exaltation of Mr. Warren who has written an "air-conditioned gospel called The Purpose Driven Life".

Way to fool 'em Ricky Boy! Keep those cards and letters with cash coming!

Since on his recent 'book tour', he did not have the answer for people asking him as to "few their be that find it..." (that 'narrow road') AND CONTINUES ON THAT NOT SO NARROW ROAD on into the next life, WE WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO ALL THOSE WHO (like Rick Warren and Joel Ostein as "America's, and Oprah's, Pastors, et al', of today") to keep on truck'in UP THAT 'wide road' for in that 'next life' PROMISED BY JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF, in which we 'stand up again' IN SINFUL FLESH, same 'dna', different 'dust', THAT THERE, the 'narrow road' might be found TO ALL THOSE WHO LIKEWISE DO NOT HAVE THE ANSWERS for people like Hannity and Fox and friends POINTED QUESTIONS as coming from their 'catholic influenced worlds' AS TO WHY DOES THE BIBLE EMPHASISE "few their be that actually FIND IT". As to that 'broad road' "WHICH LEADS TO DESTRUCTION" we simply must add, THE BIBLE SEEMS TO SAY THEIR ARE TWO TYPES OF 'BROAD ROAD' (one being for those 'deceived', while the other for those NOT deceived)!

I can't wait to read this issue and learn more from the wisest man I've ever had the privilege of meeting. For those who get to know Pastor Rick, they will grow to love and understand why God has chosen to use him to have the kind of influence that he does...all in the name of Jesus! Thanks for dedicating this issue to helping people find their life's purpose!
