Small Town Meets Big-Time Forgiveness in Action

Every week, David Pinckney preaches to his congregation about being like Jesus. Now the small-town New Hampshire pastor is discovering not everyone wants to follow through with that challenge-especially when it comes to forgiveness.

Last week Pinckney did the unthinkable for many of the 2,000-plus residents of Chichester, N.H., by inviting a convicted child killer to live with him and his family for at least two months. After officials couldn't find anyone else willing to take in 60-year-old Raymond Guay, who spent the last 35 years behind bars on charges of abducting and murdering a 12-year-old boy in 1973, Pinckney opened up his home-where his wife and four teenage children also live. Unfortunately, most of his neighbors believe his kindness is now making a once tranquil town unsafe for everyone.

Pinckney, who leads River of Grace Church in nearby Concord, has received several angry phone calls, endured a protest outside his home and even heard someone threaten to burn his house down. In a recent town meeting, more than 200 people gathered to appeal Guay's relocation to Chichester, and local police have publicly stated they understand people's fear because of their meager numbers (the town employs only four full-time officers).

"My concern is safety," said Merrimack County Sheriff Scott Hilliard, whose department assists Chichester police. "To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't want Mr. Guay to be living in my town. I'm a parent, too."

Pinckney met Guay through a prison minister and believes he's a changed man since meeting Christ in 1993. "We would not be doing this if we thought we were endangering our town, neighbors or children," he wrote in an open letter to the town assuring them Guay is trustworthy.

Not everyone is buying it, despite such assurance coming from a man who's been well liked and respected by the community. "It was said this could disrupt life," Pinckney said. "People wouldn't like it. He's not liked. But at the end of the day, this is what Jesus did. He defended the defenseless. He was a friend of sinners." [AP, 3/18/09; boston.com, 3/19/09]

0 #5 Greg Bar 2009-03-31 07:32 i don't know that people's fear is simply about forgiveness, but more about 1) BEING ON GUARD - which God often tells us to do, 2) TRUST - which even Jesus didn't do with some people, and 3) WISDOM - it may simply not be smart to put someone with an extensive, repeated problem near people he may be likely to be tempted to have a problem with again (i.e. kids).
He said to even give people our other cheek if someone slaps us, but NOT OUR KIDS' CHEEKS!
It's easy to pontificate regarding forgiveness, but let's love with wisdom.

0 #3 Gale Caudill 2009-03-25 01:16 I admire this Pastor for his obediance to Gods word. I have a daughter and am on guard to watch over her, But I agree that this man must be forgiven. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. no one alive has by passed sin. Thank you pastor for your stand in teaching us something. Quote

0 #2 sandie medlin 2009-03-24 13:31 Common sense and wisdom should have a say in this situation. This man should think again. I am sick to my stomach with so called "ministers of the gospel" who claim they are hearing from God but are not acting according to the scriptures. There are two sides to salvation and two places where a soul can possibly reside for eternity. Its a choice. Love is one sided when it fails to take into account consequences of a negative action that influences all people in general. If hes going to do this for this man then he may as well sign a petition to close all the prisons and ask his congregation to start taking these people in them selves. He needs to watch more of the daily news about how trusting someone you do not know who has been involved in a heinous crime such as this man is, can get you killed!! Please rethink Wisdom and use a little discernment.. Quote

0 #1 Kayjona Fair 2009-03-24 13:12 Where is your faith in God? All of you have failed the test of true followers of Jesus Christ. Remember I Corinthians 6:9-11? Especially vs 11 "And such were some of you; but you are washed, but you are sanctified, but you are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of God." As a born again believer you came out of something into the knowledge of and a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. If you do not accept this man's born again status, why should anyone accept yours? What does that say about the power of God to save, heal, and deliver? Perhaps you are just religious and not relational. Finally, the words tells us judge not lest we be judged… take the beam out your own eye first you hypocrite (actor, pretender), before you try to take the mote from your brother's eye. Matthew 7:1-5 Quote
