The Spirit of the World

worldlinessThe head of a large missionary organization told me that they are being sued by two of their members. These people had earlier dedicated their lives to missions.

Now they have various ailments. One man has ulcers. A woman, who lived in the tropics, has skin cancer. A "Christian" lawyer, hearing of their problems, advised them to sue the missionary organization. Their afflictions, he says, are "job related."

The mission director shook his head. "They were willing to give their lives—but I guess that didn't include stomach and skin." The missionaries and their lawyer have been infected with what Paul called "the spirit of the world" (1 Cor. 2:12).

Despite the classic Pentecostal definition, worldliness (the Greek word is kosmos) is far more than cosmetics. It is also more than R-rated movies or X-rated prostitutes. Worldliness is focusing on the things of time rather than things eternal.

The sin of today's Pentecostal leaders is not sexual impropriety—acts hardly worth mentioning. The real problem is a life stance which focuses on the visible earthly kingdom rather than the invisible kingdom of God. It's evidenced by incomprehensible wealth, overwhelming debt, ungodly fund raising and lavish homes.

It's sad that the muted lips of the Assemblies of God were only able to blow the whistle after their former heroes were caught. Sad, because worldliness is far more than smoking and sex. Sad, because many Assemblies of God leaders were emulating the same materialism exhibited by those now trapped in their own web, paralyzing the denomination's power to police except when it came to outward acts.

Americans—most of whom are middle class and caught in their own worldliness—see us taking offerings from the poor in order to feather our beds. They call us Cadillac Christians and wonder why we don't give away more than we keep. They seem to know God has called us to walk by a different standard and are angry when we don't.

Too many of our leaders resemble the worldly sons of Eli—Hophni and Phinehas—who "treated the Lord's offering with contempt." These forerunners of today's prosperity preachers enjoyed temple living, eating the fat which should have been used as a burnt sacrifice. Because of them God put the death curse of Ichabod on the entire nation.

The "spirit of the world" has infected all of us. We see it in the struggling black churches where the poor, unable to rise from their poverty, elevate their pastors to the role of king. We see it in the once-poor Pentecostal churches which, having ridden the charismatic wave across the tracks, now rival the downtown banks and hotels in plush materialism.

We see it in the liturgical churches which have gold-plated the cross as a status symbol. Their clergymen, who are sometimes imitated by "uptown" Pentecostals, dress themselves in royal robes, title themselves as "reverends" and drive royal chariots for one reason: status.

Tell me, can you picture Jesus dressed in scarlet and wearing a dangling cross? And what about the rest of us? We spend millions on self while giving pennies to missions. Our American brand of Christianity has become a wealthy counterculture which no longer cares about the image it projects. For every soul won to Christ by our flashy buildings and multimillion-dollar television ministries, there are millions who drive by, angry at the injustice these money-suckers represent.

We brag about being New Testament Christians while living the lifestyle of Nero. We have become like Demas, who deserted Paul "because he loved the world."

I recall the opening statement made by Francis MacNutt at the Holy Spirit Conference in Jerusalem in 1976: "If Jesus were on earth He wouldn't be here today. He couldn't afford the registration."

We have forgotten who Jesus was—and how He lived. As a kid I thought the ushers took the offering up into the belfry and burned it as a sacrifice. That was before I knew about preachers who used it to buy gold faucets.

"The greatest task with which the church is confronted," Dietrich Bonhoeffer said from his Nazi prison, "is to teach people how to live in this world."

And I add, without letting the world live in us. So we have two problems: What to do with the bodies of our fallen comrades and how to keep from falling ourselves? Commenting on this, Roy Hicks Jr. of Eugene, Ore., said he was reminded of David's attitude toward the death of Saul.

He lamented his fall and sent his mighty men to rescue the bodies of Saul and Jonathan. "While we must not compromise the standards of righteousness for leaders," Hicks says, "we also must not allow the 'bodies' of those who have fallen to remain exposed for the devouring analysis of a fallen world."

The confused folks of this culture—who judge us by the behavior of a few—are looking for a breed of people who are different, who are not in bondage to the world as they are. The only way we will ever restore our lost credibility is to pick up our wounded, renounce what we have become and recommit to be like Jesus.

From 1979 until his death, Jamie Buckingham (1932-1992) wrote the "Last Word" column for Charisma magazine, which originally published this article. He was the editor of Ministry Today magazine at his untimely death in February 1992—more than 20 years ago.

NO organization, or ANY man, or denomination (including the now A of G pentecostal worldwide) HAS EVER "reconciled ANYONE" unto God. God "reconciles" AND HE ALONE does the "reconciling" AND HE DOES SO THRU HIS SON AT HIS RIGHT HAND "hereafter" and "forevermore". Anyone who believes the false doctrines re: "reconciliation" AS TO GOD, who believes Jesus has Unfinished business down here, must leave His Father's Throne, TO FURTHER RECONCILE MAN TO GOD, OR TO RULE AND REIGN "PERSONALLY" over this earth or ANY OTHER of the worlds to come (and to go), has NEVER been 'born FROM ABOVE' AS WAS THEIR STATED LORD AND MASTOR Jesus Christ. They may have been 'BORN AGAIN' (TWICE BORN in this earth) EVEN DELIVERED AWAY FROM PAGANISMS, demon possession, possessions, et al, BUT HAVE NEVER TRUELY BEEN BAPTISED subsequently into the Holy Spirit "and fire" (EVEN IN MUCH 'STRANGE FIRE' as claimants of pentecostalism, even in much enthusiasms) BUT HAVE NEVER BEEN 'BORN FROM ABOVE', nor reconciled to God

1992, when 'Pastor Jamie' PASSED from this tiny Globe (in his living soul BODY which housed his 'human spirit within', leaving behind his 'dust to dust ONLY' temporal BODY) there were only a few WHO HAD ACTUALLY SINGLED OUT the problem with Azusa Street 'spinoff' denominations HAVING SO MUCH TROUBLE with 'the spirit OF THE WORLD'. THE Assemblies of God being the MAIN 'spinoff' FROM 'oneness pentecostalism' (having been previously the major 'spin off' from Azusa St.) LEAD THE WAY IN THE UNBIBLICAL 'anti-christ' spirit of the last days, IN PROCLAIMING the 'baptism of the Holy Spirit' CANNOT LEAD A PERSON TO ENTIRE SANCTIFICATION (nor can baptism with Holy Ghost AND FIRE either). Buckingham (just before passing TO AWAIT his own individual 'next life' IN RESURRECTION, same 'dna', different 'dust', still in likeness of sinful flesh of First Adam) was beginning to speak out AGAINST 'denominational spirit' of the ENTIRE world' CHARISMATIC 'progressive ONLY' sanctification FALSE DOCTRINES.

#2 'single out' a person or denomination ? Never, unless they have 'stood out' AS "what John called MANY 'anti-christs' EVEN IN THE WORLD OF 'JACOB'S TROUBLE' (aka: the 'day of the Lord' IN WHICH HE WROTE his letters ONLY AFTER the Book of Revelation to those Seven 'pentecostal' churches then of Asia Minor, even after writing III John BEFORE II John and his narrative of his GOSPEL of John, ALL WITHIN THE TIME FRAME OF 'THE DAY' of the Lord WITHIN A GENERATION or within 40 yrs., Jesus had said "he would survive Peter", but "would die" BEFORE the actual "end of the entire world"). ANY denomination (OR INDIVIDUAL) who does not recognize THAT THIS TINY PLANET HAS ONLY ONE 'Jacbo's Trouble' TIME=PERIOD prophesied, AND FALSELY CLAIMS THE 'END OF THE AGE' has 'another 7 yrs. tribulation period' people can 'count on', EVEN a 'millenial' of beating 'spears' into 'plows only', ARE HOUSES of worship, followings OF LAST DAYS 'ANTI-CHRISTS' WHICH APOSTLE JOHN said "was many", from "myriads" then !

Y. Caward,

Was there a particular individual with whom you wished to communicate?

As I'm sure you know, the author of this article, Jamie Buckingham, passed away in 1992.

You may send any inquiries to .

Thanks,

#4 response, NOW far too late, for the 'sudden ending' is upon us NOW ! BESIDES, clear prophesy is the entire Globe will be being misled by the 'fullness' of the total of 'wandering stars' (HAVING BEEN SENT HERE BY GOD 'in thirds' until all who were to be sent here ARE HERE). These upcoming holidays should be considered as to NOT KNOWING which 'day' (Christmas or New Years) when Russian military Navy WILL LAUNCH (at orders of the Russian Orthodox Church) in their own way of 'celebrating' the survival of the 'end of the Mayan Calendar' IN WHICH THE ENTIRE GLOBE will be when ALL 'worldwide' "least" expect it TO ACTUALLY HAPPEN. No books or commentaries CAN CHANGE what already has happened past, AS TO THE "ENTIRE ANGELICS" wandering 'stars' HAVING already downloaded THE ENTIRE GLOBE into believing IN A JESUS Who has not already come (by His "angelic saints" or "holy ones" in 70 A.D.) and what's left is ONLY that 'one day' only His father knows OF WHICH DAY AND HOUR 'FINALE' DOWN HERE !

We are firmly convinced 'THE SPIRIT of the world', as Jamie found in his own denomination' PRIOR TO LEAVING THIS EARTH AND TAKEN FAR FROM this only initial temporary only introduction to 'eternal existence' SOMEWHERE IN GOD'S EVER-EXPANDING MATERIAL UNIVERSE -
was mainly the results of that false pentecostal doctrine of 'progressive sanctification' at each one's own individual pace. THIS HAS PROVEN TO BE OVER THE MANY YEARS both before Jamie and AFTER his going to await his 'next life promised' why so many leaders HAVE FALLEN ! (even have taken many a person with them INTO THEIR FALL FROM GOD'S GRACE in their individual lives). The angelics of the parousia of Christ, COMING TO THIS TINY PLANET for to bring an end to life in sinful flesh bodies FOR THIS PLANET, and to reserve it for 'spiritual bodies ONLY' of 'devil and his angels' or 'messengers' which also includes humans who fail God also in that 'next life' promised WHERE blasphemy of the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven EITHER!

To single out the Assemblies of God is wrong. The people there are Christians also. Each church is autonomous. There are some congregations that I do not like. However, ours is as good a church as yours.

We will not gain disciples by negativity and sniping at one another. The leaders have nothing to do with me. I submit to God only.

Assemblies of God dropped any idea from Azusa Street revival which had to do with 'entire sanctification'. Since that denial CONNECT with baptism of fire, both the 'leadership' and the 'laity who sit on the boards' of this major denomination, are becoming more and more 'out of control' when 'spending', PUTTING THEIR ENTIRE EFFORTS INTO THIS LIFE ONLY, believing in materialism is proor of God's blessing, AND THE RETURN OF JESUS WILL BE VISIBLE (AND WE NEED 'THE BEST', most valuable in comfort and protections, WHEN HE COMES BACK HERE in Person ?
