Tough Job Market for Protestant Pastors

Shrinking attendance and the recession are making for one of the worst job markets for Protestant ministers in decades, according to a report in USA Today.

There are more than 600,000 ministers in the United States, but only 338,000 churches, according to the Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches. This is causing a glut of qualified but unemployed pastors, especially as church attendance in many mainline denominations continues to slide.

Smaller congregations are being hit particularly hard because they typically have more trouble finding funds during bad economic times. Many are now unable to afford a full-time minister. With the average church attendance in the United States at 75 people, these small churches are now being forced to either pay their minister less or use part-time clergy.

"There's lots of really good pastors out there who are having a terrible time," Phil Leftwich, executive presbyter of the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee, told The Tennessean. Among Presbyterians, there are four pastors looking for work for every one job opening.

Seminary enrollment is declining as well, possibly in response to the tough market. According to the Association of Theological Schools, national enrollment is down 6.4 percent since 2005.

However, a large pool of unemployed ministers is good for some groups. Churches that are financially stable, especially larger churches with big staffs, can take their time in selecting the pastor they think is right for the job. Also, retired pastors who are willing to serve at small churches to supplement their income are finding more opportunities. [usatoday.com, 6/7/10]

Correction on the last part of my paragraph.

Before (HE) can rebuild anything, it must be broken down. Sorry for the coladeral damage, but let God continue to show you who you are to minister (to) in our out of the church. I chose to follow His leading and prepare (---) for whats to come. And I have not stopped ministering, I just do not approach it as before.

Also, in reference to your second comment, you said that "there are many quality, humble, hungry for God servants of Christ in denominational ministry, they may be hard to find but they are there." My friend, I believe I may have filled that qualification had I not seen all the other mess you spoke about, and that is my point exactly, the traditional church is not going to be able to truly minister the Gospel God desires them to any longer because there are too many who have set bad examples. "People blaspheme the name of God" because of our poor ministry ethics. That is precisely why I believe He is allowing these things to take place, because He wants and desires reformation. Before you can rebuild anything, it must be broken down. Sorry for the coladeral damage, but let God continue to show you who you are to minister in our out of the church. I chose to follow His leading and prepare not for whats to come and I have not stopped ministering, I just do not approach it as before.

Pastor Turner,

I thank you for sharing, I only have this to say, I did not leave the scriptures in (ICor 9:7-11) out as if I was attempting to manipulate the content of the scriptures. I figured if anyone who wanted to know the full content, they would read and come to their own conclusion. My personal understanding as I read those scriptures is that Paul was making the point that I shared, even though we desrve to be paided, we should not expect it least we hinder the furthurance of the gospel.

Now you know different. The church is full of flesh and carnal ministers who have somewhere along the way forgot they were servants under the Lordship of Christ and believe the church is their’s for the taking and boy do they take. But they are not the majority nor a reason to throw it all away. There are many quality, humble, hungry for God servants of Christ in denominational ministry, they may be hard to find but they are there. My burden and call is to keep myself on my knees and look forward as I endeavor to follow the Lord and minister to His people in His church. I feel for you pain and disappointment. The enemy has used this kind of things on too many people to drive them away into isolation and hurt. I had to decide that I would not go that route although I was highly tempted, after I was burned the second time by denominational officials- I mean burned!

You failed to mention the context of Paul’s statements. Vv.7-11 he makes the biblical case for he and Barnabas being supported by those they ministered to (from the OT I might add) and then he writes that he made the personal choice not to abide by the biblical principles he just stated. There’s two things here-context is important and Paul used the OT to preach from and establish principles to live by in the NT. I don’t get the motivation to reject the OT when that was the Bible of the first century church. The NT wasn’t approved until the 3rd century. It’s obvious when reading the epistles the apostles not only appealed to the teachings of Jesus but to the OT Scriptures as authoritative also, as Paul does here. GO FIGURE!

I still teach classes weekly. Remember, under this COVERNANT; Heb. 8: 9-13 I will put my laws into their minds, and write them in their hearts.... 11. "And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, KNOW THE LORD, for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest". I can personally tell you that a man that lives in the desert by himself or in the middle of land not known by man. That man or woman still knows GOD. The Lord continues to download himself into the ones that called upon him. This will never change. The only thing we can do is find the lost, tell them about Jesus, and fellowship with the ones that already know him. God Bless and keep doing what the Lord instructs you to do, Great works have begun in you and will continue as he directs your path. The 5 Fold Ministry, plus the re-structuring of Minsitry Offices will be needed for the battles that we all will face in due time.

Thanks Brother I wanted to share the same truths but could not think of a way to share all with such little space. I am amazed how thousands of believers out side the old institutional church are finding these same truths you wrote about with out the help of pastor, prophet, or human teacher. Interesting no human teacher yet all receiving and believing the same message you wrote about that I and thousands if not millions believe in. I discern that this is truly the work of the Holy Spirit so no man can take credit nor try to make another man made ministry out of it like we did in past. Through all this change going on today I am seeing three kinds of Christians today the institutional church believer, the house church believer, and the un church believers all born again believers but all seeking God through different
methods. Who's bringing this change Holy Spirit or man?

Praise God! I have always been able to identify a Prophet. From one Prophet to the another. Your message registered 98% correct. Just keep doing what you are doing and the Lord will give you that perfect walk that you have a desire to follow at this time. You sound to me like "ABSFS". If this is true. Feel free to personally email me at . God Bless and keep strong in the WORD. You are not alone.

Yes, we are to study to show ourselves approved of God, but that does not mean I need to go to any man to teach me, in fact scripture tells me, now that I have the Holy Spirit living in me, I do not need that man should teach me, because He will lead me into all truth!

Get in your prayer closets till you are sure you are hearing of God, repent of any error, and He will begin showing and speaking to you, and then we can see a true move of God, not just this Sunday social gathering we call the church today!

I believe if pastors were honest with themselves, they would admit things do not seem right as they are in the church. And they will not going to get any better if no one stands for truth, and no one repents of error!

May He guide and lead us through the times were are about to go through and may He take the blinders of religion, and indoctrination, and traditions, and theology’s of men off us. And may we learn to seek and hear more clearly from Him as to what we are called of Him to do.

Remember, God chooses the foolish things to confound those who think they are wise. So your titles mean little to God. The disciples were not educated men in the sense as we believe we have to be with all our degrees in bible, but they did understand they were to followed Jesus, and they walked in His power and anointing, where did we go wrong?
