Gulf Pastors Pray for Oil Spill

About 100 churches in Florida, Alabama and Mississippi held a prayer vigil Monday night for the oil spill threatening their coasts, according to the Sun Herald. Pastor Clinton Hobbs of Fountain of Life Church in Saraland, Ala., organized the vigil, which had churches from Destin, Fla., to the border of Louisiana participating.

“If we call upon God, he will take care of us,” said Michael Barnett, pastor of First Baptist Church in Ocean Springs, Miss., during the public prayer. “He meets our needs much more than tourism or fishing because this is his creation and we must turn to him for the answers.”

Churches prayed that the oil leak would stop and that God would protect as much of the environment as possible, from the coasts to the inland marshes. They also prayed for protection for the oil workers, scientists and volunteers who are working to help stop the leak.

“We all must trust God more than our government or the oil companies. It is not what man can do but what God can do in a crisis like this,” Barnett said. [sunherald.com, 5/17/10]

It is easy to criticize- it's our human nature. But God wants our hearts. Do we just go on business as usual, or cry out to Him, knowing that apart from Him we can do nothing. "...if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14 Repentance is the key.

Is it ego that makes Christians act like they have it all under control "with God"? What happened to humility?

Pastors say "it's God and not the stock market or the job market." But when the stock market and job market fail, they are the ones crying "where is the money???"

There is a big disconnect on how God really works!

He may answer by telling you to get out of there for your own safety! God works with our minds, not just our emotions. This passive Christianity we see too much of today just puts everything on God and bypasses the brains and human responsibility He gave us to use and do something and work with others really short circuits a lot of our power and makes us look like Christian idiots. People want to trust their pastors, but when they bypass reality, we have a problem, and we do! We have many because of this "someone else is in charge here" mentality. God gave us DOMINION and a project. How well do you think we are doing? Louisiana and others have a BIG oil pond coming. They get to deal with it. Yes prayers help, but they are not a magic pill. They are interactions done (or not done) by the individuals known as Christians.
