California Pastor Blesses Bikes

A pastor in Portola Valley, Calif., blessed a crowd of bicycles, scooters and even roller blades on Sunday in an effort to promote community, according to the Silicon Valley Mercury News.

Pastor Mark Goodman-Morris blessed about 50 different wheel-based vehicles at his Valley Presbyterian Church, located outside of San Francisco. He used special water bottles to sprinkle the cyclists and their bikes.

"It's much more of a Catholic thing to bless things," Goodman-Morris said. "There was nothing in any of the Presbyterian literature on how to do a blessing. I have to admit as a Presbyterian pastor it's funny to be blessing bicycles, but it felt really good to bless the bikers."

The group included a wide range of ages, from an 87-year-old to a young girl, who organizers guessed was about 5 years old. She came in a princess dress to have her roller blades blessed.

After the blessings, the group of cyclists went off for a family ride in the area around the church. [mercurynews.com, 4/20/10]
