Christian Yoga Catching on in California

QUOTE: "Christ is my guru. Yoga is a spiritual discipline much like prayer, meditation and fasting. No one religion can claim ownership." —Brook Boon, explaining his view of Christian yoga. According to the Los Angeles Times, hybrid classes combining yoga practices with elements of Christianity and Judaism are growing in popularity in Southern California. Boon, author of the book Holy Yoga, has trained nearly 200 Christian yogis, or yoga teachers. [latimes.com, 4/5/10]

First, my wife and I are both Christian. Second, she finished a massage therapy training program at the local JC. Yoga was one of the final classes. She, of course, chose only to focus on the stretching aspect of the class and not any new age part of it. I just found out 10 minutes ago that my back pain is a compressed disc. I intend to use yoga, as my wife suggested the physical benefits, to stretch out my back. Just call it stretching if anyone has a problem calling it yoga. I will be doing "yoga" moves to help my back but I still follow Christ.

I agree with Donna Barret...these are demons entering our churches and confusing Christians. Nothing gives better peace in your mind, heart and soul as prayer to God. Nothing opens our eyes like reading the word of God. Let's get back to basics. God is not complicated, we make this relationship complicated.

This is why I had to leave the institutional church because it is allowing in another gospel. Yoga is another gospel. I did not leave Jesus just the present blind church.

These are the people who are entering our churches under the disguise of religious meditation. They are sent by satan to confuse us about the truth of Jesus Christ and his real message to us. It also allows the evil spirits to get a foot-hold in our churches. These teachings are not of God and woe to him that takes part in it.

I'm guessing Brook Boon will make the talk show rounds and make lots of money doing it. But I would NOT want to be in her shoes. Sadly I'm not at all surprised, it was just another accident waiting to happen. When in doubt, mix and match. Adding a dose of yoga, will not make the gospel more appealing, just more deceiving.

Ridiculous.

Need anymore be said? If Christians cannot see that then they need to get to know Jesus and read their Bible.

I agree with the above posters. Yoga is not something that should be practiced by Christians.

There is no such thing as hybrid Christianity. The Good News about Jesus the Messiah remains the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Mixing elements of Christianity, which come from the Bible, with elements of Eastern yoga and meditation is at the least a perversion of the Gospel, and at themost a demonic-inspired practice--and I would say both. It negates salvation only by faith in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross as payment for our sin, by adding works (or practices) to it. You end up with some amalgamation of Christianity, Judaism and Eastern Religion. It cannot save you for life with God in His Kingdom, to be ruled over by Jesus, on this earth, when He comes a second time... Nor can it offer you the help of the Spirit of God during this life... You give up the Spirit of God for what you get from this weird religious perversion.

Yoga is based in Hinduism. You would want to avoid mixing these two together. Here is an article that may be helpful on the matter:
