Giving 20-Somethings a Voice

QUOTE: "So many churches only have older leaders in the core areas of leadership. They may have a younger youth pastor or perhaps music leader. But for the bigger decisions in a church, are younger voices getting to give input? … Often [young people] may have good ideas, but their churches don’t have systems in place to hear their ideas and they get ignored. They are allowed to give voice to shape the youth ministry or young adult ministry, but not the church at large. … There is a lot of innovation and creativity that happens while people are in their 20s. They are very in touch and at the cusp of our fast-changing culture." —Dan Kimball, pastor of Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, Calif., on why more churches need to incorporate the thoughts, perspectives and opinions of 20-somethings into their decision-making processes. Though the 48-year-old pastor believes church culture should remain God-centric rather than catering to a younger crowd, he sees too many churches ignoring the voices of those most plugged into modern-day culture. "As we are on mission, we should be paying attention to the culture that the people we are on mission to reach are living in." [christianpost.com, 11/23/09]

Yes, young people should have a voice, but a much larger problem is the church's treatment of single adults. We need to see far more pastors and other leaders who are single (or at least have been single for several years) who will understand the needs of people who are not "families".
