Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 was a sad day for exegetical enthusiasts and everyday pastors alike. After 87 fruitful years on earth, Bible scholar and ministry innovator Spiros Zodhiates passed away.
Best known as an authority on Greek New Testament and for his extensive Bible helps (including The Hebrew-Greek KeyWord Study Bible), Zodhiates came to the United States in 1946 to join the fledgling American Committee for the Evangelization of the Greeks. Under his presidency 20 years later, the organization became known as AMG International and operated as an evangelistic and relief agency that reached 55 countries around the world.
Throughout his life, Zodhiates was commended for his commitment to the Word of God and for his zeal to empower both students of the Bible and those who ministered the tangible gospel through humanitarian aid.
"It is impossible for me to fully express my observations of Dr. Z’s compassion," remarked Bill Knowles, a county clerk in Chattanooga, Tenn., where AMG International is based. "God empowered this dedicated man to lead a world organization that presents Jesus Christ in many ways—hospital facilities, orphanages, leprosy ministries, Bible training centers, newspaper, radio and mass evangelism efforts. He also ministered to those experiencing natural disasters in the world by dispatching food, clothing and medical supplies. … He was a man filled with energy and endowed by God with a keen intellect."
