Sacrilegious Offerings

Taking the offering should be a sacrament. But some have turned it into nothing more than a cheap gimmick.

Wow, can he take an offering!" my associate admiringly crooned. The visiting evangelist had just spent more time pitching the offering for his ministry than he would later spend teaching or preaching the Word.

Is it just me, or does anyone else ever tire of the cajoling, begging, pontificating, hyperbolizing, intimidating, rebuking and downright manipulating that too often precede the passing of the plate?

Oh my, here come the letters as I take measured aim at that sacred cow that so often puts a roof over our heads, pays our bills and underwrites endless lunch appointments with the sheep or visiting guest speakers.

Do you know whom I've been considering in my recent offertory statements? Before preparing what I will say over the sacrament of giving, I picture the single mom with three kids. I visualize my gray-haired, widowed intercessor whose Social Security check barely pays her monthly bills. I also see the prosperous businessmen and women who probably know more than I do about living by faith and having God as their source.

So what am I saying? Simply this: Taking an offering is a sacred trust, not a carefully punctuated, planned and premeditated pitch.

People give to the Lord, not to the church, the building, the needs, the programs or the man or woman of God. We give because it's right; it's God's idea; it's sacred. We give what is holy unto the Lord because we love the Lord and the work He is doing in the world. We are cheerful and thankful, humbled and awed, faithful and committed. Yes, we tell people to expect a harvest, but the emphasis is not on me reaping but on His harvest.

I cringe each time the offering-taker invokes the passage in Luke, "'Give, and it will be given to you'" (Luke 6:38, NKJV). Immediately eisegesis, not exegesis, follows. Whenever the speaker, televangelist or announcer shows pictures of starving children, I am reminded of the godly missionary who shared with me how one ministry took pictures of her orphanage and used them to raise tens of thousands of dollars for his ministry while her children continued to freeze and starve.

It's time to return "taking the offering" to the realm of sacrament instead of committing sacrilege. Have we become Aarons shaping golden calves? Can we humbly speak God's Word without adding our own cacophony of string-pulling anecdotes? Good stewardship isn't just how we spend God's offering--it's also how we take it. Can anyone say amen?

To me, it is a heart issue. When we give what God has blessed us with to expand God's Kingdom, it is from the heart. When we do this, and if someone abuses that Trust or misuses those gifts for selfish purposes, it is out of our hands. God looks at our motives for all that we do, so let's leave Judgment up to God and pray for discernment in sowing into "Good" Ground.

God Bless You.

Amen to your article, at our church that is the very last thing mentioned and we forget sometimes, no plate is passed, no one walks to the front, the offering/thithes box is in the back, our church has existed for almost 10 years that way, It is on the people to know the obligation to the Lord and the work of the ministry. No need to Beg....

Shalom, y'all ~ The Ancient Scripture Scrolls (yes those, Virginia) in the weekly Torah teaching actually has a lesson on offering/donation/contribution , called T'rumah. It is found in Exodus 25:1-27:10 with the Haftoarah portion in 1 Kings 5:26-6:13 and the B'rit Chadashah (New Covenant) 2 Corinthinas 9:1-15. The overall theme is "Heartfelt Offerings for the Mishkan (Tabernacle)." Note that the teaching in T'rumah is not an imposed Temple tax, nor a hyped hand-out. The lesson is "heart felt" for GOD's holy, separated and place of dwelling among us. Those who love GOD with all their heart, head and hands have no hang-ups in a heave (elevated) offering. Those who pretend they love GOD with ALL their heart, head and hands bemoan the silly foolishness of those who put on a show of the " give and take" offerings. GOD is not mocked. Those who engage in pretensions are punished. And the world is not fooled by the gilded gold of ministries who can no longer say "silver and gold we do not have". They do not have the power of GOD to deliver, resurrect and make whole because they do not do nor say what YESHUA says and does. So, teach your sheep wisely about what you are for, rather than against. Be relationship rich and rant poor. Leaders lead locally. Shalom. Love & Prayers, Rabbi

Integrity! Integrity! Integrity! Thank you for speaking about this shameful topic, heads-on-straight!!! I have been so very heartsick (as I believe The Master is too) over the years by witnessing these $$ excesses and outright abuses by pastors!!! The church of pentacostalism/charismaniacs has become tained by these scams, at the expense of innocent people who are grappling with issues of faith and trust in God's provision. I believe there is a special place in Hell itself for those fools in pastors' clothing. (Yes, I do believe this is THE EXCEPTION to otherwise prevenient grace!)

Amen! I've been to too many conference meetings where the offering message got out of hand. Too many times I've heard God won't (or can't) bless you if you don't give!
Outrageous! I stopped going to one evangelist's meetings because of it. Thanks for your perspective.
