Truthseeker, YOU can do NOTHING to save yourself! You are equating your level of obedience to your level of salvation. Instead, equate your level of obedience to your level of COMMITMENT. Being "saved" means saved from death, which means I am trusting that when I drop dead, Jesus will catch me. You are saved from the effect of sin, not the temptation of sin. If you are having a problem with sin, keep pushing back against it! Sin wants you to think you're losing, but regardless of the outcome of your resistance to it, you have already won! Fight the Good Fight, and believe Jesus when He says "I will never leave you, or forsake you"

Truthseeker, aspects of what you wrote, match what St Paul said in Romans chapter 7. IE you both sound frustrated that you are unable to attain perfection. But I think that this is where grace comes in. It's preferable that we are perfect, but we are saved by faith. So as long as you are committed, dedicated and repentant, you are saved due to God's grace taking care of the rest.

The sin I struggle with now are not the sins I committed (without struggle) before conversion. But, I do fall flat on my face REGULARLY. So, the times I've heard the "hyper-grace" message, I grabbed hold of it tight. But, I've always thought a relationship with Jesus will (as it did with me) change your life and if you didn't WANT to obey, you need to question your salvation. However, this WANTING to and not ATTAINING the level of obedience I desire has me actually questioning my salvation, which sends me in a tailspin.....

The problem with this is, unless one is perfect, one cannot claim another is un-saved due to sin in their life. If you have ANY sin in your life, then it's merely a matter of degree. At what point is the sin too much, and one either loses their salvation or the sin amount is evidence of never having been saved? We may have our suspicions of another's lack of salvation, but isn't THAT what Jesus was talking about when He said "Judge not..."? I don't believe Jesus was talking about not judging sin, because there are so many places in the Bible where we are told to rebuke sin, so He must have been talking about judging another's salvation, because, after all, HE is the Judge! Could it be that dissertations such as this one speak more to what offends the author, than to the personal, intimate relationship people (Christians) have with Jesus Christ? One may not understand the relationship another has with a third, but that lack does not make the other's relationship any less valid.

Michael - I appreciate your article. I too am burdened for the level of sin many will excuse and defend in the hyper-grace movement. However, I know I am his and the reason I do not do the things that displease him is because I am his son. He loves and accepts me as I am, so I don't want to do anything to displease him. Why would you want to do things that anger or upset your friend, if you value your relationship? So, I don't draw lines based on my own preferences, but I draw lines saying: Does this activity draw me closer to God, does it cause me to love more?

I have found very few preacher really understanding GRACE. Those that are living from HURT under the LAW pushes things out of line, for sure. Dr, I must say that the scriptures you use are powerful but I can clearly see you don't understand the context they are in. I and have been evolved in debates many times.
Brother Michael, I'll graciously take your "rebuke" but I'd just like to point one little thing: In all of the recent exchanges that I've had with you, I have not personally attacked you -- I have only critiqued your theological ideas. The fact remains that you have not substantively established at what point a Blood-bought believer, whose soul is anchored firm and secure in Jesus, permanently departs from eternal salvation. I know the reason why you won't answer the question is that you don't know the answer and for some reason, you won't admit that you don't know the answer. What you teach about the loss of salvation for a true believer is every bit as wretched and error-ridden as the presumptuous doctrine of universal salvation.

The poem "Pablum from the Pit" is so interesting and valid. Its strong title and final "punch line" are highly effective . . . and *affective.* I grew up attending a New Age ministry; my mother was even a minister of this "church." I think that early on it was well-intended, and it drew wonderful people. Today I barely recognize it, really. I've heard Warren Smith talk about waking up to the surprising source of New Age pap. I believe the title of his book on this topic is "When the Light is Dark." Like many of us, he discovered that what he had thought was a most-enlightened spiritual journey turned out to be insidious. These "ministries" present in such an appealing way. But when you hear some of the "teachings" a little farther on . . . for me, it was shocking. Thank you for your insight -- and for this article and poem, which may wake some people up. Two thumbs up.

Very important point you raise- if you don't have a baseline of beliefs how can you stand for anything right? Certainly a world without physical laws would be madness, or a world without social laws would be impossible to have a functioning social contract. So why should we forfeit spiritual laws? Better to understand their true purposes, and live accordingly. So, yes I totally agree with the core of your message. That being said, smoking and drinking, rapping and modeling are not exactly the potent sinful issues on the grand canvas of madness which is our modern society. Why don't we talk more about the rampant love of money, material wealth and status which has totally hijacked our cultures? What about the inept top-down, community-weakening social structures we are accepting which stigmatize the poor and compartmentalize people into cliques detached from the reality of the world? Theoretically, if there was no heaven and hell, would our actions remain the same? That is the question

Ed. C., I took the time to respond to you out of love, and I'm truly disappointed by your response, which I categorically reject, both in terms of what you try to put on me, along with your false accusations about going by feelings as well as "going back under the Law." I can only pray for you that you will receive a greater revelation of God's truth and grace -- one that will deliver you from judgmentalism towards others as well -- and one that will ground you in the realities of God's eternal salvation, an eternal salvation that I enjoy with total security every day of my life. Let's let God's Word have the final say here: 2 Tim 2:19 have the final word: But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity." And Matt 7:21: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."

Good article. I find that everyone who is a seeker falls on one side of this argument or the other and it is largely dependant on our background and experience. We either stress primarily that "God is Love" or "God is Holy". Both, of course, are true. We all believe ourselves to be balanced, but alas, few of us are. And whatever side we fall on, we are fearful of the extreme of the other. So, we preach against the extremes, which is good I guess, just so long as you know most of us who fall the love side of things aren't modeling lingerie and visiting strip clubs. And those who fall the holy side of things (like yourself apparently) aren't trying to make our relationship with Jesus all about following the rules or else the big mean angry God is gonna get us. The answer is LIVE IT. And a true believer will have the fruit to show what kind of tree he or she is!

Michael, when you say that walking in persistent, unrepentant sin causes a forefeiture of salvation, you're drawing the same line in the "salvation sand" that my ex-pastor did. However, you just draw your line farther back with your own little dollop of "greasy grace". The goal for every believer in Jesus Christ, first and foremost, is eternal salvation. A goal is only really real if it is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Your salvation test automatically fails because it is not specific and measurable and never will be. Michael, be honest, you don't really know when you have crossed a relationship line with God because you're not God. Are you just going by your feelings? If so, we might as well go back under the Law -- at least then, success was quantifiable.

Dr. Brown touched on it slightly in one article I read and it is PAGANISM IN THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH. Talk about error, try googling: THE ORIGIN OF CHRISTMAS, THE CHRISTMAS TREE, GARLAND, WREATHS, YULE LOG AND EVEN HOT CROSS BUNS. Then after you learn, search yourselves and see if you are prepared to cleans yourselves of this LIE. I won't even wear NIKE anything because Nike is the god of speed!
It seems to me that a couple of comments here are referring to Catholicism in which I was raised, and thought as a small child to be evil. I was taught that GOD was an evil, mean GOD ready to pounce on you at every turn. Not until my new birth did I realize the opposite. Not only that, upon finding out I was a blood born Jew, did I realize why I love the Old Testament SO much. We Christians NEED TO LEARN HOW TO BE JEWS, AFTERALL, JESUS WAS A JEW and he wasn't a whimpe. Gentiles are not merely ADOPTED, rather we are GRAFTED IN. that means we have become part of the original tree or bloodline. WE ARE JEWS! Let us become GOOD SOLDIERS OF THE CROSS.

Dr. Brown is absolutely correct. What young people crave today is the unadulterated truth of the Word of God combined with power and love. This is the ONLY thing that separates the Church from the world. They can get "feel-good" and "spirituality" from many places; it's all around them and doesn't require anything of them. Jesus requires everything of us, but those who know Him know what a blessing it is to take up our cross and follow Him.

More importantly, do you teach that to others? Annae: Forgiven, adopted into the family of God. Won't be removed, forsaken or left...that's you. Sin's PENALTY was dealt with, PAID for at the Cross. Finished, Jesus' Blood on mercy seat testifying of payment paid in full. Jesus death was ENOUGH payment. We ARE now THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD.
The missing link,THIS ARTICLE, & THE DISCUSSION even of the Author's responce (so far) is THE PERSON of the Holy Spirit IN THE LIVES of a 'baptised WITH the Holy Spirit BELIEVER. People claiming THEY "HAVE" the HolySpirit OF PROMISE within, by simply COMING UNDER JOHN'S BAPTISM of repentence from dead works and of faith toward God (Elementary ESSENIALS) instead of knowing from the Word THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT of "conviction" comes upon them EVEN AS HE ONLY CONVICTS the entire world "OF SIN" CONTINUALLY? However, when a 'repentant' RECEIVES FURTHER BAPTISMS with and in co-operation WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT OF PROMISE (BEYOND CONVICTION and repentence from dead works and of faith towards God, ELEMENTARY essentials), ONLY THEN CAN WE SAY the Holy Spirit of Promise HAS KNOCKED UPON the door of our hearts, AND "we have allowed HIM to come in and 'sup' (temporarily, occationally, BUT NOT PERMANENTLY) within our 'hidden INNER-man of both SOUL AND SPIRITUAL BODIES !
Ed C. I also am not a fan of Hagin so won't discuss him here. The common end of most grace discussions seems be with heaven or hell. I spent many years in a street ministry "witnessing" to drug addicts, murderers, prostitiutes, alchoholics, homosexuals, cult followers, etc and was always asked WHY I spent my time "witnessing" to the person asking the question, being "accused" of doing it for a "jewel in my crown or a mansion in heaven". Sinners I found, NEVER let "Christians" get away with conduct that "Christians" let each other get away with. Thus the reason they don't want to repent. If our motives are only the reward WE get now and in eternity, then our "selfishness" is only slightly more "moral" than a sinners. If Jesus gets GLORY from sending me to hell then that is what our motive should be. Life and eternity isn't about what WE get, but about what gives Jesus glory. If a "Christian" sins once, never, or constantly, and goes to hell then praise Jesus if it give HIM the glory.

Ed. C., I was not planning on adding my comments here, but I see you are quite eager for a response, so here you go. I do not for a moment think that if a believer died with an unconfessed sin that person would be damned. God forbid! As His children, we are in the "forgiven" category -- declared righteous through Jesus and called to walk that out -- and confession of sin for the believer is for relationship, not salvation (as per 1 John 1:7-2:1). It is only if we turn away from the Lord -- denying Him or walking in persistent, unrepentant sin -- that Scripture warns us of the danger of forfeiting our salvation. Please understand if I will not be able to follow up with further responses, but feel free to call into my radio show or contact my ministry at www.askdrbrown.org. God bless!

Although it is good to ask for forgiveness often, and daily, if that were true, than our salvation is not a free gift and we are doing works to be saved. The thing is: we need to be right in our salvation, to be sure we are not going to hell because of our non compliance with Christ on the cross. It is a free gift ; lest any man should boast.
[2] Several months ago, the CBN presented a report in which the daughter of a prominent person in the US was presented as a model Christian. This woman who went to one carnal musical programme and was performing sexually provocative dance steps. Even the CBN presenter herself was excited by the performance. Another one was so carried away by the fleshly excitement that she apparently forgot she was on air, till the male co-presenter mildly rebuked her for her carnal stand. The CBN features many of these so-called Christian music in their programme "One Cubed". They are praying for revival in the US and so far most of the Christians who are praying for revival cannot count one thing they have stopped doing in order to pursue God's holiness. Steve Hill is at this moment issuing the same warning, even with a stronger note. You can watch/listen to his interview with Sid Roth. IS ANYONE LISTENING?

[1] Before you get mad at Dr. Michael Brown please check the Bible [Acts 17:11] Biblical illiteracy is destroying the Western Church. Europe is in a worse state. There is so much idolatry that people no longer know where the Church stops and the world begins. Christians of this generation have been sold a big lie that the more they resemble the world, the more they are able to influence them. This is contrary to the word of God, which teaches separation in order to make impact. Jesus was separate from sinners yet whenever he had contact with them, He made a life-changing impact on them. Soe American Christians also go to IDOLS shows. Please see James 4:4, 1 John 2: 15 - 17; 1 John 3:2,3; 2 Cor. 6: 14 - 17; Romans 8: 5 - 8.

Mr. Buick, I believe the primary point that Michael Brown is making in this article is that the "gospel" we are hearing preached and embraced these days is a "license to sin" by the adherents. There will always be consequences for sin i.e. " we reap what we sow" - if we sow carnality and immorality, we will reap death. This is a spiritual truth no one can deny! The Grace of God gives salvation through belief in the substitutionary death of Jesus for all. After we believe, we walk after the example that Jesus left for us in the Word of God. Don't make the gospel so hard and hateful for those who want to really know Jesus and the power of His resurrection!

Manovfaith - When I was saved I can say the same as you, "... I have experienced the Grace of Jesus and found that I don't struggle with the sins that once held me bound...". In Romans 7, Paul writes about the struggle between our natures, the spiritual & the carnal - he uses himself as an example. If we truly examine ourselves we can see and we can feel the same struggle going on between the spiritual & the carnal. I must say if we don't see it or worse, refuse to see it, 1 John 1:8 warns, "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." Furthermore, James 2:10 says, "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking ALL of it." (my emphasis). I know I stumble everyday... even if it's an unclean thought, but there's a promise after the warning in 1 John 1:9 - "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

"Whereby we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: for our God is a consuming fire." Hebrews 12:28-29 God's grace allows us to do what? Do 'our own thing'? Live any way we want? Condone or excuse fleshly indulgences, knowing His grace will cover them? Nope. Hebrews 12 tells us that God's grace allows us to SERVE HIM acceptably (which means serve Him in a manner that HE approves of, not any ole way we choose), with REVERENCE and GODLY FEAR. The "reverence" and "godly fear" seems to be 'missing' from much of today's "it's all grace, all the time" church world. In fact, those who talk about 'the fear of God' are scoffed at as LEGALISTS!

As I was meditating on this column, and the 'debate' between Dr.Brown and the "it's all grace, brother" teachers, I feel the Holy Spirit gave me the following verse from the letter to the Hebrews which mentions grace (which, I think, beautifully 'encapsulates' together the concept of God's grace and our working out our own salvation: "Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace whereby we may SERVE God acceptably with REVERENCE and GODLY FEAR; for our God is a consuming fire." Hebrews 12:28-29 The grace teachers always seem to avoid talking about the "fear" of God; or mention "serving" God (the New Testament word is DOULOUS, which really translates to being God's SLAVE!)

He wrote off the Old Testament and wrote off the things that Jesus said (apart from selected passages such as the sermon on the Mount), he wrote off Hebrews and then he wanted to ignore the parts of Revelation and Corinthians which talked about homosexuals and murderers not inheriting eternal life - because of course if no law applies to Christians, then these parts don't apply either (except that Paul - the great grace exponent wrote that part in Corinthians too - so that left a few difficulties). In the end that part of the Bible which actually applied to him was extremely small....

Yes, we pick up OUR OWN cross and follow HIM (but not into HIS cross which is through HIS grace, not OUR, nor any, of HIS grace applied to OURS, His cross being SPECIAL and way BEYOND ours, even IF we do pick up OUR OWN & follow Him). JESUS CHRIST was the "last" (the ending of the reign of) "ADAM" and his "earthiness" (in contrast with the MAN "FROM HEAVEN", His rejection of that "earthiness", temptations, BOTH ACTUALY AND COMPLETELY experienced HERE ON THIS TINY PLANET. Following Christ causes us to be compelled to walk in Love and bear fruit. I have experienced the Grace of Jesus and found that I don't struggle with the sins that once held me bound. I went to church for 12 years before I found life in Christ. I did everything for the wrong reasons until I experienced His love. THAT is the message of Grace. I live in Him. I give no thought about sin and an angry God. His love is ALWAYS wooing and drawing me. Because sin was dealt with, there is nothing for Him to be angry with. You are either trusting in Jesus (grace) or flesh (Law).

Responding to Sam Buick's comment #14 above... Sam, I don't think you are being quite fair in your comments concerning Dr.Brown's recent teachings on the 'hyper grace' teachers. Dr. Brown was very careful to note that he is not negating the concept of the importance of GRACE in the life of a believer, all the way from salvation to ultimate union with Jesus. Dr. Brown is not calling people to return to the law, or live under law, or attempt to be justified by keeping the Law. Only Jesus was able to keep the Law in all its components... and thereby FULFILLED the Law (but He did NOT 'do away with it'). What Brown is commenting on is the current practice in the Christian church were hyper grace teachers are basically teaching that it is IMPOSSIBLE for a believer to sin in God's sight, because we are covered by the blood of Jesus for all past, present, or future sins.

It is a shame that so many like Sam Buick have such a limited view of Salvation and Grace. Salvation doesn't just bring us forgiveness, but by grace he changes the very nature of the sinful creature into a child of God. Without this work of regeneration there is no salvation and no forgiveness. The law is only required to control the evil desires of the heart. Once the heart has been transformed it longs to do the will of God. It longs for purity and godliness. If a man wants to go to strip club, he doesn't need law, he needs the grace of God to change his wanter. If the grace of God doesn't change what you want then it is not grace at all.

I like Dr. Brown. But, he doesn't understand "grace" and has co-mingled law with grace, which is no grace at all. We can't have it both ways. Galatians, Romans, Ephesians, 1 & 2 Corinthians, and in fact all of Paul's teaching in the epistles reveals that there can be no law mingled with grace. Also, Dr. Brown doesn't understand new creation realities or the consequence of being a new creature in Christ and what that means about who we are as Christians and that reality is more than a positional truth. The hard facts stand out. Either we have grace, or we have law. Paul teaches we have grace. And he calls the mixture, the law and a "false gospel." Dr. Brown needs to decide whether he believes the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Kingdom, or another gospel, which is law and a contraction of what Jesus Christ purchased for believers.

The 'fate of our Nation' IS NOT in our hands, it remains in the Father's Hands, even as NOT EVEN IN HIS SON'S hands, nor any angel's hands, EVEN AS ALL TIMES AND SEASONS, and 'day and hour' within those 'times', 'seasons' WITHIN THOSE TIMES set aside IN THE WORD OF THE LIVING GOD. Being 'salt' (preservative and healing agency) AND 'LIGHT' (in midst of darknesses) MUST BE TAKEN "IN TRUTH" as directly FROM THE RHEMA WORD OF GOD (even as the prophets of OLD, who dared not compromise and say something AS DID BALAAM of old WHICH WAS NOT based completely WITHIN AND UPON THE ACTUAL WORDS OF THE LIVING GOD as recorded for us IN THE INSPIRED SCRIPTURES). So much of today's evangelists, prophets, et al, ARE plagerists only !

Well Said Dr. Brown... I will be sharing this. My heart is breaking for those in the Church. Believers are being fed Bologna and being told its Prime Rib.... many are so lost and spiritually infantile, but are being told they are mature. Praying Adonai will rescue HIS people from complacency and ignorance of WHO HE really is... Shalom!

You've hit the nail of the head. I haven't seen what you're talking about re the model or the rapper but I'm horrified to think how deluded they are and that they are proponents of this ungodly message. Recently I heard a sermon on TV from a well-known preacher talking about how much God love us... He's right but I couldn't help thinking it sounded far too much like a psychological counselling session. God bless you... we need to be reminded that there is a cost to follow Jesus. Christians in many other countries of the world are experiencing what that means.

Great post, Doctor! This reminds me of the state of CCM (contemporary Christian music). We have no more Steve Camps or Keith Greens. It's ALL "positive, encouraging" (to borrow a CCM radio network's slogan). No warning against sin, so mention of Hell, no references to God's wrath.

Thank you, Dr. Brown for this urgent message for the Church of Jesus Christ for this hour. Truly, I believe our Lord has made you a watchman on the wall to warn His flock of the impending disaster that is approaching for a nation or individuals who embrace the soft gospel now being preached by the 'angels of light' in our midst. I became a born again believer in Jesus Christ in February, 1976. Stay true to our Lord, and keep proclaiming 'from the housetops' His urgent message to His church!

I have personally experienced some of the decay in the church, the lack of Christ-likeness in that I have gone thru several crises thru my Christian walk (financial, health, some major losses) , none attributed to any sinful choices on my part, yet the church I attended each of those time never offered help or any support of any kind. My unbelieving friends and family see this happen to me over and over.....so is it any wonder they see Christians and the church as nothing but self-righteous hypocrites. Scripture would be considered a widow and the bible states that TRUE religion takes care of orphans and widows and that the world will know us (Christians) by our love towards one another. The Word states, if you cannot love one of your brethren, who you can see, how could you love God, whom you cannot?

Keep the Voice heard! Know this, you are not alone! God has a people who are not Ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We will stand up for the Truth as souls are weighed in the balance. If we don't, who will! If we let the Light die, than the darkness takes over. There is only darkness because there is an Absence of Light! So keep the Light shining, it truly encourages others to do the same. thank you.

Dr. Michael Brown, we need more people like you to stand up and tell the truth with love. Thank God for those who value the shed Blood of Christ and who refuse to cheapen it with a compromising Gospel. As a former cow-worshipping Hindu, I hardly have words to express Who Jesus is to me! In ministry for the last 25 years, my heart breaks to see what is being taught today in most of the Christian churches. It is so sad. Thank God for the 7,000 who have not bowed their knees to Baal. May our Lord raise up an army of Holy Ghost preachers with a "Thus saith the Lord", who will push back the flood of garbage that is being spewed out in the Name of God! Souls are at stake and for most part, the church is fast asleep! Dr. Brown, we thank the Lord for your ministry! May our Lord continue to use you mightily to spread His Truth without fear or favour. God bless you. Pastors Peter and Prema Pelletier Toronto, Canada www.rlwc.ca

Great article again Dr.Brown. Tozer also stated that the entire New Testament church would have to completely backslide in order to be in fellowship with the Church of his day. How much more so the church of today. His friend Leonard Ravenhill wrote "Why Revival Tarries" and I would encouarge all your readers to read it. Hebrews 12:14 states that "...without HOLINESS, no one will see the Lord". Ravenhill always said that the initial evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit was HOLINESS. Another preacher has stated that "if the Holy Spirit left the planet tonight at midnight, tomorrow morning 99 percent of church activity, church programs and Christian ministry would go on untouched.” Our lives were created for HIS happiness shown buy OUR conduct, not the other way around. KEEP PREACHING THE PURE GOSPEL. GOD BLESS YOU SIR.
