I cried as i read this. This mindset of requireing a minister to be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT 24/7 is why many hide thier sin and challenges. Where would they go? Why would they tell you anything they suffer or struggle with? I wouldnt. When dirt is thrown in someones face the first reaction is to cover thier face. This is what you are doing throwing dirt at Ted Haggard. He was an amazing minister during those years of his struggle. I think its amazing that he was able to do all he did and still carry this heinous sin at the same time. I have much compassion for him. Imagine the war he waged. Get off your high horses and get some compassion and start handing it out to the men who deserve it the most, the ones who carried the torch themselves.. they deserve more grace!! HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE!

ALL of us struggle with sin! Many of us struggle with hienous sins of the flesh and of the mind, myself included. Didn't God give us the Holy Spirit to help us to overcome sin? Some Christians struggle with incest or pediphelia. Should they just give in and say "God made me this way? When Ted was on Oprah, she asked why he couldn't just be himself and accept what he was (gay?). What if Ted was a compulsive womanizer or child molestor? Would Oprah have encouraged him to embrace that part of his personality? I doubt it. He would have been chastised for not having the character to rise above his urges. Why the double standard? I give Ted's wife credit for TRYING to articulate these truths. She got little support from Ted and outright opposition from Oprah. Don't get me wrong - I love Ted and I pray for his redemption and recovery, as we all should. I love Oprah Winphrey. In many ways she is a good, compassionate person, though very misguided. I pray for her salvation - she could be a mighty tool in the hands of God.

There would be two things that I would focus on with somebody who says "God made me this way." First, God created us to have feelings But not every feeling we have is from Him or is good or is something I must act upon. Second, Scripture teaches us that as a result of the Fall (original sin), we all are born into sin. We're all sinners, plain and simple. But does this mean God made us that way? No, God created us to have free will as opposed to being robots. Great question. Be sure to respond, though, with much patience, respect and love. The focus must be winning and restoring souls NOT winning arguments!

Mike, one of the things I learned in dealing with my own same-sex issues is that saying "God made me that way" is a convenient excuse for not addressing this critical issue. Not only should you not have to change, you shouldn't even want to, since God made you that way. But if you want to...

At this time, there is no conclusive evidence that homosexuality is genetically determined. However, if a biological factor was found that makes some predisposed to homosexuality, it does not absolve the commands and truth of scripture. As a result of the fall, there are many conditions that exist that were never part of God's original creation. The power of God is able to redeem and restore every area of our life. We must be committed to the life-giving truth of Scripture and let that be our guide through life. Not our proclivities.
