In response to J.W. van Borselen concerning whether Jesus tithed....Jesus WAS the tithe. He was the 1st son of God who was given back to God (His firstfruits) dying on the cross for our sins. Those who only see tithing as being under Old Testament law...and exempt from grace...on the contrary. The law required much...but grace requires much more. Study the scriptures...the requirement under the law was less than the requirement under grace. If you choose not to tithe, go right ahead. Aferall, our Father owns the cattle on a thousand hills and NEEDS nothing from us. But He does desire obedience. And my heart is to honor Him by giving Him back all of the "1st's" in my life because the Word says that the 1st's are important to Him....the first part of my day...the first part of my week....and especially the first part of my income. I would challenge you to seek the heart of the Father on this issue....He will not lead you wrong. Be blessed, brother. In Christ, Julie

In my lifetime I have heard many sermons on giving but almost always it's in relation to giving to the church. If one reads the teaching of our Lord Jesus, we find that most of his sermons on giving was to those in need.. the good samaritan, a cup of water to one of his disciples, your second cloak to someone who has none... and so on. It is good and instructed to give to the church to support the work of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ but it is commendable in God's sight to give to our neighbors in need.

Just wonder how come this is declared to be biblical and yet this way of giving is quite different from what we read in the New Testament. All what was given was for meeting the needs of others. Paul said: "that there may be equality" and in Acts we read they had everything in common. So the focus in giving is equality and not toward "ministry" in the first place. We have no example of a multi-million dollar usurping church system based mainly on tithes to this system. This simply did not exist in the New Testament times. Speaking of which: even the tithes in the old testament only consisted of food and because of this were supposed to be given to people not to ministry in itself. The only group of people that tithed were the farmers from land and animals. Because the curse on the land had been taken away in the old covenant Gods’ blessing would flow through the abundant harvests and the growth of many animals. Tithing was in the first place a system to bring equality. The Levites didn't own land and the strangers, widows and orphans were the poor among the Israelites. Tithing of money tithe was unheard of even though money was already in use in Genesis and many people earned wages in the form of money but they were not supposed to tithe. Their money could not be redeemed in this way because monetary tithes were not accepted. This just makes you think were the modern day concept of tithing came from….. Many say that giving to God equals giving to the church no matter what this church is doing with the money. If so, why did God specifically state that the people who gave tithes were responsible themselves to give these to other people: Dt. 26:12 When you have finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, you shall give it to the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied. 13 Then say to the LORD your God: "I have removed from my house the sacred portion and have given it to the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the widow, according to all you commanded. This leaves us with the question why they were not supposed to give to the temple which in contemporary teachings is replaced with giving to the church. This is explained by the tithe the Levites were supposed to give from the tithes they received. Only this tithe went to the priests/temple. So 90% of the tithes served the purpose of equality and 10% was food for the ministers in the temple. This looks to me like the inverse of today’s situation. All this leads us to an even more remarkable conclusion: Jesus never tithed because he was not a farmer. Paul didn’t tithe either for the same reason. To make it complete: probably none of the first Apostles ever tithed. The fishermen didn’t have produce of the land and because of this fish was not considered something you could tithe. So the founders of the first churches were not involved in tithing. This is the main reason we do not find any teaching that Christians should tithe. Also, the law of love leading to have everything in common made this obsolete. How far have we strayed from the beginnings of the church? Reading this article I’m left with the question how someone who invests his whole life in building up a big church is able to have no ulterior motive in helping people to give as the main portion of what these people give is directed towards the big ministry he himself is building and even his own salary. This truly is a miracle! Would he just as easy preach, at the expense of what he is building, that the most important matter about giving is giving out of love to other people? Bringing the church back to its foundation in this way would truly be a revolution. Everyone suddenly becomes a minister of God’s love. All the money that is invested in earthly structures and systems suddenly becomes money in use for Kingdom priorities. That will leave us without big paid staff and buildings but who cares the first Christians proved they didn’t need these either…………….
