How Not to Be a One Hit Wonder

Lightning might strike twice in the same place but I'm not going to count on it.

Multiple hits happen in an environment of systems. A system is simply a series of checklists.

Effective leaders like checked boxes. A leader knows that it's much easier to demonstrate how to complete a checklist than it is to create a new checklist. A system produces predictable results with high frequency. There is one best way to do a thing, until an improvement is proved by testing.

Leaders remove vagary by the specificity of a checklist. Communication becomes focused on the list. Progress can be measured in checks. Evaluation is simplified by completion of the checklist. Training is focused on the proper procedures. Culture becomes defined by company checklists.

It's not a stretch then to believe that innovation and creativity can be transferred by a list. I have long believed that the creative quotient can be improved through process. Some are quick to claim, "I don't have a creative bone in my body." Yet, with training and checking of boxes, innovative leaders teach the creative process. Leaders stimulate ideation by developing a system for creation.

A one hit wonder can occur as a random event. It takes a system of petri dishes to create the proper environment for growth of big ideas.

Big ideas strike often in the right environment.

"Then Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.' Amen" (Matt. 28:18-20).
