This Needs to Stop!

In yesterday's Greenelines ("Leaders Who Eat Ice Cream ..."), I briefly discussed the impact of a spurious variable upon the outcome of decisions made by leaders. A spurious variable affects an outcome without the knowledge of the leader.

Often, we assume the something "causes" something else. In many cases, cause and effect is complicated. If an unknown "something" affects the outcome of an action, there is usually a spurious variable at work.

I also promised yesterday to consider a suppressor variable as it relates to decision making and leadership.

Effective leaders must regularly suppress actions that come against goal achievement. In every workday, there are people, events and random occurrences that attack a plan or project. We run into walls and defenders of "this is how we've always done it."

Leaders clear paths. Authority is used to suppress activities that waste resources of time and money. Sometimes, organizations slip into meaningless routines that only continue because no one has stepped into the role of the suppressor.

Some actions simply need to be stopped. Some people need to be subdued. Some revolts need to be crushed.

Leaders tend to be known by what they start. The best of the best leaders are quick to end things that need to be ended.

What do you need to stop today?

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last" (Rev. 22:13).
