Great Leaders Don't Seek Perfection

Perfection is a lofty goal. It also limits output.

Leaders who seek perfection are rarely satisfied, often disappointed and in general, less productive. Perfectionists simply do not get as much done as leaders who accept excellence as their goal.

Excellence is also difficult to achieve. But, at least excellence is attainable. As we lead our teams to excellence, we set a course built upon realistic expectations.

The powerful question, "Can we improve this project without adding costs or resources?" is a barometer of excellence. It's not that difficult to observe a project and see room for improvement. Effective leaders look for improvement with an eye on all elements of cost:

  • Finances—what is the absolute cost for each milestone of excellence? Apply the concept of marginal utility to an analysis of excellence.
  • Human capital—How will our pursuit of an increment affect our people? Is the next notch really worth midnight oil and human stress?
  • Opportunity cost—What won't we be working on while we inch this project further toward perfection?

What is the ROI of the pursuit of excellence? Consideration of the factors listed above may go a long way toward helping the assessment.

Work is excellent when we have done all we can do with what we have been given.
The role of a leader is to make sure we have done all...and having done all...to stand in faith.
