Create a Culture of Small Stuff Matters

Sometimes, the small stuff DOES matter.

A culture of "don't sweat the small stuff" can cause a lot of sweat for leaders.

By instinct—if not training—leaders know that every action matters. It may all be small stuff, but it all matters. Consistent execution of small things doesn't happen by accident. A good leader is behind the scenes of dotted I's and crossed T's. Execution of details is quite intentional.

Consider the small details of these big things ...

  • A crime scene. CSI has conditioned us to understand the intricacy of minute details.
  • An architect's design. Just a little wall here or there?
  • A failed bolt in an assembly line. What happens when the line shuts down?

Is this list in your ministry? Is anything neutral? Isn't excellence about keeping the little foxes out of the vineyard?

I continue to teach that nothing is excellent as long as we see room for improvement. In my experience, improvement is subtle. Open my eyes so that I can see the big, little things.

To achieve excellence, everything must matter, always. It's not about micromanaging; it's about major doing of little things. As "micro" is used in conjunction with "manage," isn't it about focusing on the little bolt? Who will do it?

Leaders must expect that their team will execute minutia. SOMEone must sweat the small stuff.

From typos to tardiness, everything counts. Leaders catch people doing small stuff in a big way and reward it.

Because it matters.
